PLAYA GUIONES EAT: GO JUICE
Since its earliest beginnings, Nosara has been a magnet for bohemians, hippies, and vegans. It’s no surprise then, that when a juice truck came along, perma-parked itself close to the beach entrance, and got to work lovingly creating a range of juices, smoothies, and healthy food items from the freshest ingredients available, its reputation skyrocketed. Since opening, Go Juice has become the go-to spot for surfers, yogis, beachgoers, and anyone else in need of great tasting, nourishing treats in a relaxed, informal setting. If it’s a beverage you want, then there’s a whole range of good stuff from which to choose. If it’s food you’re after, check out the tuna poke – paradise on a paper plate!

NOSARA EXPLORE: SIBU WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
In the past decade, more and more people, both foreign and native have opted to call Nosara home, but the true locals will always be the marauding packs of howler monkeys that roam the jungle canopy. Sadly, this increasing human presence has had a detrimental impact on the local wildlife. SIBU Monkey Sanctuary was set up as a rescue center to care for orphaned, displaced, and injured animals. It provides shelter, food, and medical care for monkeys and other local wildlife with the aim of eventually releasing them back into their native habitat. Educational trips to SIBU are available throughout the week. These popular outings are a great opportunity to learn, give back, and get up close with some of Costa Rica’s most beautiful creatures.
NOSARA: PLAYA OSTIONAL COASTAL RESERVE
The Guanacaste coastline is famed for its sea turtle populations. The epicenter of this activity is Playa Ostional, a black sand beach a 30 minute drive North of Playa Guiones. Recently, the World Wildlife Fund identified Playa Ostional as one of the planet’s leading nesting sites for Olive Ridley ocean turtles and a crucial component of the local marine ecosystem. “Arribada” is the name for the spectacle that occurs where thousands of turtles come ashore to lay eggs. A month later, the hatchlings breach the sand and begin their perilous journey to the ocean. Arribadas occur year round, but the best time to see them is between August and December, around the time of a new moon. If you are fortunate enough to see the Arribada, go with a local, environmental mind: step back and observe the turtles with a gentle heart.
PLAY IN NOSARA, COSTA RICA
Defined by its “Pura Vida” attitude and shorelines untainted by any form of commercialism or high-rise buildings, the district of Nosara is a small coastal town renowned for its surf and yoga culture within the tropical jungle. Located on the Nicoya Peninsula on the Pacific side of Costa Rica, this is not a destination for the faint of heart traveler. With its winding unpaved bumpy roads, getting there is part of the journey.
Boasting a wealth of fauna and flora, you will easily catch glimpses of wildlife amigos everywhere, which may include pizotes, iguanas, anteaters, black butterflies, howler monkeys, Manta rays, sea turtles, dolphins, and whales. Then there are the sunsets. Almost revered like the ‘Church of Mother Nature’ at 5 p.m. daily, bodies will flock to the beach like clockwork. With no filter needed, catch the most jaw-dropping cascades of color. At dusk, be serenaded by a symphony of insects, who as charming as they sound, are a tad more Jurassic sized in the jungle. The nights won’t be stood up by the sunsets either; celestial heavens put on a show— often with a waning moon smiling back.
NOSARA: PLAYA GUIONES
Huge quantities of ink have been spilled in reference to the achingly beautiful array of stunning beaches that skirt the coastline of the Guanacaste peninsula. However, Playa Guiones stands out for a reason, and it’s not just the rustic beauty of the shoreline. Great surf, tons of wildlife, and a modern infrastructure are just some of the elements that continue to attract increasing numbers of annual visitors. Despite increasing development, many of Playa Guiones residents have witnessed first-hand the pitfalls of ‘progress’ responsible for turning many other Costa Rican beach towns into tourist traps. Consequently, they have worked to ensure the natural beauty remains. Decades ago, Playa Guiones was declared a national wildlife refuge. The resulting legislation means construction on the beach is forbidden. After setting foot on the sands, most visitors instantly understand that they’ve come across something special – a place that demands respect and continued environmental protection.
